My Father is a Hero (1995)
Jet Li plays an undercover cop who
is forced to leave his son and ill-stricken wife in China for an operation involving an
arms dealer in Hong Kong. However, when a picture of his face is found during
a robbery and arms exchange, he becomes a wanted criminal. Inspector Fong from the
Hong Kong police, played by Anita Mui, returns to China to confront his family, but
suspects that Jet Li may be undercover.
This is a good dramatic film from Jet Li. The story
is a bit flimsy at first, but you soon begin to feel for the characters and it gets easier
to ignore some of the plot holes. Jet Li portrays the distraught father well in this
film, and it is a welcome change from the usual goofy character he plays in his other
films. Anita Mui is excellent as the kind-hearted police inspector- it is so
refreshing to have a strong female lead. And, of course, the kid from New Legend of
Shaolin is amazing as Jet Li's son, Sia Ku, who starts the movie by winning a martial arts
competition.
The action starts out good, and becomes great as the film
reaches its conclusion. The final fight at the antique auction is exciting and very
enjoyable. It gets a little silly for a moment with some of the wire stunts
involving the son, but otherwise it is a non-stop ride with excellent cinemetography.
